Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) has launched a new “Early Bag Check” service, allowing travelers to drop off checked luggage remotely before even entering the terminal. This initiative, operated by Bags, aims to reduce congestion in the ticket lobby, especially during peak travel times like spring break and major events.
How the New Service Works
Passengers flying on Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and United Airlines can now check bags at the PHX Rental Car Center or the East Economy Parking lot. After dropping off their luggage, travelers can use the PHX Sky Train to reach their gates, bypassing the often-crowded airline ticket counters.
The service is free, but standard airline baggage fees still apply. Each passenger is limited to two checked bags. Drop-off is available between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m., including holidays, with a window of 90 minutes to four hours before departure (per airline policy).
Why This Matters: The Rise of Remote Check-In
The expansion of remote bag check services reflects a growing trend toward streamlining the airport experience. Airports and airlines are actively seeking ways to reduce bottlenecks during peak travel, and remote check-in is a key component. This approach isn’t just about convenience; it’s about efficiency. By dispersing passengers away from central check-in areas, airports can improve flow, reduce wait times, and potentially lower operational costs.
Other Airports Offering Remote Bag Check
Phoenix isn’t alone in offering this service. Several other airports across the US have implemented similar programs:
- Charleston International Airport (CHS): Free Check ‘N Go service at the daily parking garage and Rental Car Center.
- Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas: LAS Curbside Concierge at the Rent-A-Car Center and Terminal 3 departures curb.
- Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY): Check ‘N Fly service at the Park MSY Express economy garage.
- Orlando International Airport (MCO): Disney Resort guests flying Southwest can check bags at their hotels.
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO): Remote check-in at the long-term parking garage and Rental Car Center.
- Tampa International Airport (TPA): Bag check available at the TPA Rental Car Center.
Cruise passengers can also leverage this convenience at airports near major cruise ports (Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Seattle).
Alternative Solutions
Travelers also have other options to avoid long bag check lines: curbside check-in (if available for their airline) or concierge services like Clear.
The expansion of remote bag check-in represents a significant step toward a more efficient airport experience. As passenger numbers continue to rise, expect more airports to adopt these solutions to manage congestion and improve traveler convenience.
