In 2021, Alaska Airlines’ entry into the oneworld alliance unlocked a valuable benefit for frequent flyers: reciprocal upgrades between Alaska’s Atmos Rewards and American Airlines’ AAdvantage programs. This means elite members of both airlines can now access better seating and first-class upgrades when flying on the other carrier. Here’s a breakdown of how it works.

Alaska Elite Upgrades on American Flights

All Alaska Atmos Rewards members – Titanium, Platinum, Gold, and Silver – are eligible for both extra legroom seating (Main Cabin Extra) and first-class upgrades on American Airlines.

  • Extra Legroom (Main Cabin Extra): Titanium, Platinum, and Gold members can select these seats at booking. Silver members have access within 24 hours of travel.
  • First Class: Upgrades are available on qualifying routes (primarily within the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America). Upgrade priority is given based on status tier, with Titanium and Platinum prioritized ahead of Gold and Silver. Companion upgrades are available for Gold and above (except for Silver members). These upgrades can clear up to 72 hours before departure. Even basic economy fares qualify for upgrades.

American Elite Upgrades on Alaska Flights

Similarly, American AAdvantage elites (Concierge Key, Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, Platinum, and Gold) receive reciprocal benefits on Alaska Airlines.

  • Premium Class (Extra Legroom): Concierge Key and Executive Platinum members can select Premium Class seats at booking. Platinum Pro and Platinum members have access with specific fare classes (Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, N) or within 72 hours of travel. Gold members can select with Y or B fares at booking, or within 48 hours. Saver fares (X class) do not qualify.
  • First Class: Upgrades are available on North American routes (excluding Hawaiian flights for now). Priority is given based on AAdvantage status, with Platinum Pro and above prioritized ahead of Platinum and Gold. Upgrades can clear as early as 120 hours before departure. Saver fares do not qualify.

Additional Reciprocal Benefits

Beyond upgrades, both Atmos Rewards and AAdvantage elites enjoy standard oneworld perks when flying on each other’s airlines:

  • Priority check-in and security
  • Lounge access
  • Priority boarding
  • Extra baggage allowance

The partnership between Alaska and American streamlines the travel experience for elite members, making it easier to enjoy premium benefits across both networks. By leveraging reciprocal status, frequent flyers can maximize comfort and convenience, regardless of which airline they choose.
