It feels weird.

Just weeks ago the transfer ratio to Preferred Hotels & Resorts got crushed from 1:4 down to a brutal 1:2. Now there is a 30% transfer bonus. It does not bring you back to where you started. It is a band-aid on a bullet hole.

Most people shouldn’t touch this.

Here is the deal though. If you have points gathering dust and nowhere else to send them, the window is open. From May 17 through June 13 2026 Citi ThankYou members in the US can send points to I Prefer Hotel Rewards for a boost. Normally you send 1 000 points to get 2 000 I Prefer points. With the bonus you send 1 00 Citi points and receive 2 600 I Prefer points

It happens instantly. There is no limit to how many times you can do it. The bonus is baked into the backend code so you do not have to jump through hoops or use a promo code. It just works.

Why Preferred Hotels Exists

Maybe you have never heard of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.

That makes sense. They are not a chain. They do not own the buildings. They act more like a marketing agency for independent luxury hotels. There are over 650 properties across 85 countries. You know them even if you did not realize they were linked. Think Baccarat in New York. Think Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur.

Even smaller brands like Montage belong to the group. It is a loose coalition of fancy places.

The Math Does Not Sing

Let us look at the value.

I Prefer Hotel Rewards uses revenue-based pricing. That means award costs fluctuate based on what a guest would pay cash. You will rarely see high redemption value. Most travelers get about 0.5 cents per I Prefer point. And that is only if you find availability which is often capped.

If I Prefer points are worth roughly 0.5 cents and the transfer rate is 1 Citi point = 2.6 I Prefer points the math gets tricky.

With the bonus 1 000 Citi points become 2 600 Reward points. At 0.5 cents that is 13 cents total value for your 1 000 transfer points.

You get about 1.3 cents per ThankYou point transferred.

That sounds decent compared to throwing the points away. But is it great? No. Citi points can often earn more through travel portals or other transfer partners. 1.3 cents is Meh.

Who really needs to optimize a 30% boost on a devalued program? Probably no one you know personally. But if you have that Baccarat hotel itch and your Citi Strata points are burning a hole in your pocket the door is open for three months.

Do not pretend you are winning. Just pay your hotel bill with points.
