Canadian firm Taiga Motors is positioning itself to become a leader in eco-friendly winter recreation, launching three new electric snowmobile models designed for European ski resorts. This move comes as many Alpine destinations face increasing pressure to meet ambitious emissions reduction goals.

Taiga Motors has already shipped approximately 2,000 electric snowmobiles to markets like France and Norway, where demand is surging due to growing sustainability initiatives. The company’s CEO, Samuel Bruneau, emphasizes that this wasn’t simply an assembly job: “We’ve spent a decade building the core technology from scratch — the motors, the software, the battery systems — because it simply didn’t exist for this kind of vehicle.” This underscores a key point — the shift towards electric mobility in rugged environments requires entirely new engineering solutions.

The stakes are high. According to Domaines Skiables de France, the French ski association, around 90% of emissions in the European ski and snow tourism sector come from diesel-powered snow groomers. These machines operate continuously, making them a major source of pollution. Snowmaking equipment and other mountain vehicles contribute as well.
This matters because the industry is facing hard deadlines. France’s ski resorts have committed to achieving zero emissions by 2037, forcing a rapid transition away from fossil fuels.
