Millions of frequent travelers can now use a faster, hands-free security system at select U.S. airports, but participation requires proactive enrollment. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been piloting its TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program, and it is set to expand significantly over the next year.
How It Works: Facial Recognition for Faster Lanes
The program uses facial comparison technology to verify travelers’ identities. As you approach a TSA officer in a designated lane (typically marked with blue-and-green signage), a camera captures your image and compares it to the passport photo on file. If verified, you can proceed through security without showing your wallet or boarding pass, potentially cutting wait times.
Who Is Eligible?
The TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lanes are available to TSA PreCheck members and those with TSA PreCheck access through Global Entry. However, enrollment is not automatic; travelers must opt in through their airline’s frequent flyer program.
Enrollment Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
To participate, you must upload a photo of your passport and consent to facial identification through your airline’s app or website. For example, a United Airlines flyer going through Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) can find the option under “TSA PreCheck and travel documents,” then select “TSA PreCheck Touchless ID.” The app will guide you through consent forms. Once completed, you should be eligible to use the dedicated lanes.
Availability: Expanding Across Major Hubs
The program is currently available through the five largest U.S. carriers at several major airports, with plans to reach 65 major hubs by spring 2026. Availability depends on airline partnerships at each specific airport. Travelers must enroll with each carrier separately to use the Touchless ID lanes at airports where their airline participates.
Important Considerations
Despite the convenience, the TSA advises travelers to still carry a valid Real ID or passport when flying. Technology malfunctions or unexpected issues can occur, requiring manual identification. Relying solely on facial recognition is risky.
The TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program offers a faster security experience for frequent travelers, but requires proactive enrollment and awareness of its limitations.
The expansion of the Touchless ID program is a step towards streamlining air travel, but travelers should remain prepared for potential technical issues and ensure they have physical identification available as a backup.
